The direct seeder being chosen by farmers and contractors seeking improved farm productivity and lower fuel costs is the Duncan Renovator Mk III from Duncan Ag Ltd.
Tamworth agricultural technology and environmental consultant Charles Colson says, “Direct drilling is here to stay. We have a lot of clients operating Duncan Renovator drills out here.”
Direct drilling is now well proven as a cost-saving and seriously efficient method of pasture preparation or renovation. Farmers recognise the importance of retaining soil moisture to ensure maximum seed growth.
Alongside the Goulburn River, Hartsburg Berkley farms 1600 acres mainly for beef production. “We do a lot of pasture renovation, and that’s where our purchase of the Duncan Renovator Mk III comes into its own,” says farm manager Jock Bevan. “It’s a nice heavy machine that gets the front discs into the ground easily.” His enthusiasm for the calibration system is unbounded. “Once it's calibrated we don’t need to check the hopper. We get accuracy to 0.3 ha with ease.”
The Duncan Renovator is strongly built and in tough ground, the seeder with the least working parts makes sense because it avoids the hassle of downtime and maintenance costs and with the flick of switch to change from small to large seeds, who wouldn’t love the value for money.
